Prahlad Singh of Agra was waiting at the queue for a vessel at Lot no 8 to take the devotees to Gangasagar, when he suffered heart attack and died, police said.
Meanwhile, district officials said about 60,000 pilgrims have arrived at the island to take holy dip on the occasion of 'Makar Sankranti'.
The auspicious time is between 1.20 PM on January 14 and 6 PM the next day.
The Kapil Muni temple where devotees offer puja after taking the dip was being guarded by CRPF personnel this year instead of state policemen for better security arrangement, the officials said.
