Gangster Palwinder Singh alias Pinda, who escaped from police custody at Nabha, was the key accused in the murder of a Sub-inspector Gurdev Singh near Phagwara in 2013.
The 'thanedar' Gurdev was shot dead on March 31, 2013 near Khajurala village on Phagwara-Jalandhar National highway 1 when he was chasing some miscreants, police said today.
Pinda, a resident of Nihaluwala village in Jalandhar district, was the key-accused in this murder case, they said.
Gangsters NRI Talwinder Singh Tally, Pushpinder Singh Noni Lahaoria and Rajinder Singh were also involved in the murder who were later arrested, police said.
Pinda was arrested that year and lodged in the high security jail at Patiala.
Some armed persons had yesterday helped Palwinder to escape by firing at police personnel who were taking him to Nabha hospital from Patiala prison following a health issue.
