In view of several cases of smuggling of goods been detected here, Joint Commissioner of Customs Meenalochani today said plans are on to augment customs staff at the Madurai airport, even as two more flights to Singapore and Malaysia will begin operations from here.
The JC said 78 customs staff are likely to be appointed soon as the Centre had also permitted air cargo service. The need for more personnel was felt following series of detection of smuggling of goods like red sandalwood, gold, cigarettes and currency notes to Sri Lanka and Dubai or from there to India, she said.
At present the airport has 22 customs staff.
