Plea filed in HC for maintenance of Thiruvalluvar memorial

Madras High Court today made the state Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department party to a PIL seeking a direction to authorities concerned to maintain the memorial of Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar in the city.
The first bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar passed the order on a PIL filed by one R Srinivasa Rao.
Impleading the HR&CE as respondent, the bench directed the Government Pleader to obtain instructions in this regard and posted the matter to June 13.
Stating that the Thiruvalluvar Memorial in Mylapore here was renewed in 1935 by two persons, Kanniyappa Nayakkar and Subramani Chettiyar, the petitioner submitted that thereafter no maintenance work was carried out.

A representation was made to the authorities in March last to carry out maintenance work regularly and declare the site as a tourist spot, but to no avail.
He prayed for a Court direction to the Home Secretary, District Collector, Chennai,and Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation to renew 12 grounds of Thiruvalluvar memorial and to appoint a Special Officer for regular maintenance, and to declare the place as a world class tourist spot.
