The Principal of Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), Amarkant Jha Amar, who was earlier detained on charge of sexual harassment by a woman patient, was today allowed to leave after giving an undertaking.
Senior Superintendent of Police Manu Maharaj told PTI that after serving him notice under section 41 of CrPC, he was released after an undertaking was secured from him.
Amar was detained late last night at Pirbahore police station before being freed.
The complainant had alleged that Amar had sexually harassed her when she had gone to his private clinic in Makhaniakuan residence for treatment of skin problem.
The 24-year old woman hails from Sahebganj in Jharkhand.
The woman staged a protest outside his clinic last night following which a crowd assembled and police was called.
Crying foul play, the doctor alleged that the complainant woman had a fight with his compunder over payment of fees and later when he intervened, levelled allegation against him.
The doctor who is a skin specialist claimed door of the OT (Operation Theatre) was open and more than 10 patients were waiting outside when he was treating the woman.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) came in support of Amar.
IMA state President Rajeev Ranjan Prasad told reporters that it looked like an attempt of "character assassination" was made on Amar.
"In such a condition, how a doctor will treat patients," he said after an emergency meeting of IMA.
Amar, who was present at the IMA press conference reiterated the episode as a "conspiracy" against him.
Amar had been the Superintendent of prestigious PMCH before being made its Principal recently.
