With the arrest of a 35-year-old man hailing from Tamil Nadu, Delhi Police today claimed to have busted a 'Thak-Thak' gang which allegedly robbed valuables from cars at Connaught Place after distracting their owners by throwing currency notes near their vehicle.
The accused identified as Kartik was arrested by the staff of Barakhamba Road Police Station.
On Monday, one BRD Krishnamoorthy reported to police that a man robbed his bag containing a laptop with charger, datacard, office keys and some bank papers from the front seat of the car by deviating the attention of his driver, police said.
Following the complaint, a case was registered and investigation was taken up.
To trace the people involved in the crime, local information networks were activated and police personnel in plain cloths were deployed, police said.
"As per information, a trap was laid near STC Building, Tolstoy Marg, Connaught Place and one person whose identity was later on revealed as Kartik, resident of Trichirapalli, Tamil Nadu, was detained on suspicion. On his search the TPIN Letter of Laxmi Vilas Bank issued in the name of the complainant was recovered from his possession," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Vijay Singh.
On interrogation, Kartik admitted to his involvement in the case and said that he along with Santosh resident of Trichannapalli, Tamil Nadu, used to coordinate and steal bags, valuables from the car by distracting the occupants by throwing money.
Further investigation is being carried out, Singh said.
The thak-thak gang is so named because of its unique modus operandi as they would rob valuables from cars after distracting their occupants by throwing money near the vehicles.
