A constable who was found guilty of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 has been sentenced to four years' rigorous imprisonment by an Alibaug court.
Special Judge P R Bharad handed out the sentence yesterday to constable Anant Ganpat Dhake, attached to Mangaon police station in neighbouring Raigad district.
He was also fined Rs 5,000 each on two different counts, an official release from Thane Range ACB quoting Addl SP Srinivas Ghatge said today.
Dhake was trapped by the Raigadh unit of the ACB while accepting the bribe money from the complainant on May 21, 2008.
According to the prosecution, the vehicle owned by the complainant was involved in an accident and he required the orginal papers and the copy of Panchnama for insurance claim for which he had applied to the police station.
For providing him the requisite documents, Dhake demanded Rs 5000 bribe following which the complainant approached the Raigadh unit of the ACB, which laid a trap and arrested the constable.
The court in its order held the constable guilty under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and sentenced him to three years RI and a fine of Rs 5000 or additional two months imprisonment.
The court also found the accused guilty under section 13(1)(d), 13(2) and sentenced him to 4 years RI and a fine of Rs 5,000. He would serve another two months imprisonment in case he fails to pay the fine, the release said.
