The shooting occurred last night when the 31-year-old officer, Tim Smith, was on patrol after a 911 call in a residential area in Eastman, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.
While on patrol he encountered the suspect and when he exited his patrol car to investigate he was shot dead.
The suspect fled the scene after the shooting and a manhunt was underway to nab him, the officials said.
