Police turned out to be the saviour for a 28-year-old woman who was diagnosed with dengue days after her rape allegedly by her father-in-law as her parents and in-laws refused to help her in her illness possibly due to her decision to complain about the crime.
The woman landed in hospital on October 21 and was diagnosed with dengue as her platelet count crashed to 8,000, said a police official.
"On receiving the information, the duty officer at the hospital concerned, along with a woman attendant, was sent to check on the woman.
"It turned out that the woman was in urgent need of blood and her parents and in-laws had refused to help her," said DCP (north-west), Vijay Singh.
Thereupon, Netaji Subhash Place police station was informed of the matter and officials there arranged for four units of blood for the woman within a few hours.
She was discharged from the hospital after her full recovery yesterday, said the police official.
On October 5, the woman complained to police that her father-in-law had raped her while her husband was out on night duty. A case was registered and the accused father-in-law arrested after a medical examination of the woman confirmed rape, said the official.
It is suspected that her parents and in-laws refused to help her because she had gone to police with the rape complaint, the official added.
