Police recovered a decomposed body from a house here and arrested two women, a senior police officer said today.
The people living in Rynjah area of the city informed the police that they could not bear the stench emanating from a house in the locality, the officer said.
Suspecting foul play, East Khasi Hills district Superintendent of Police M Kharkrang said police team was sent to the house on Saturday.
The decomposed body of a 40-year-old woman identified as B Suchiang of Shangpung village in East Jaintia Hills district was recovered from the house and has been sent for post mortem.
"We have arrested Waiamon Kharlukhi of Mawlai Umshorshor and another woman Winnie Ryntathiang of Rynjah locality in the city," Additional SP Vivek Syiem told PTI.
They were arrested for abetment to suicide as police awaits the post mortem report, the ASP said.
Kharlukhi, who was roommate of Suchiang, had shifted to another locality Mawlai, in the city after Suchinag died, and would come every day, open the lock and offer prayers in the house and go back, a locality elder A Marbaniang said.
According to locality elders, the woman had died at least two weeks ago but Kharlukhi, who is in her fifties, insisted that the woman was fasting for a period of 40-days as she kept on praying.
