The incident occurred last night when some police personnel of the 11th Battalion opened fire during a fight with each other at the kitchen of the police barrack, Superintendent of Police, Debajit Deuri, said.
While constable Ratul Gogoi was killed on the spot, Paban Jyoti Deka was seriously injured and admitted to a hospital in nearby Golaghat district, the SP said.
Contrary to media reports about KPLT militants attacking the police station and firing at it, the SP said primary investigations showed that firing followed after a fight broke out among the policemen there.
