The incident happened this morning after Avijit Patra, who was arrested by the police last month on the charges of theft, died in jail custody early today.
The death of Avijit, a resident of Entally area, enraged people in the area, who gheraoed the Entally police station demanding punishment for a police officer.

When policemen tried to remove the crowd, the locals attacked the police with stones and glass bottles, which prompted the police to lathicharge them.
Five police personnel and ten locals were injured in the clash, the police said.
"Avijit died in judicial custody. So a proper judicial inquiry will bring out the truth. From where the question of police torture comes in this case," said Dhrubojyoti Dey, DC (ESD).
