The harbour would benefit fishermen of 20 hamlets around Poompuhar, he said after distributing welfare measures to 3,067 beneficiaries on behalf of AIADMK at Porayar near here.
Besides, it would generate direct employment to about 12,000 people and would help the fishermen of the localit earn Rs 148 crore annually.
The Minister added that steps were being taken to establish a fishing harbour at Tarangambadi too.
