: Postal services will continue in step with times contrary to the perception of it being on the way out due to the growth of digital technology, former West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi Friday said.
Post offices have been centres of connectivity between the government and the people, Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, said inaugurating a three-day philatelic exhibition- 'Gandhipex 2019' here, to mark the celebrations of the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation.
He recalled how Gandhiji used to write letters even from the prison during the freedom struggle.
He said several people were of the view that the postal department was on the way out owing to growth of digital communication facilities.
"This is not correct as postal services would continue in step with the times and render service in tandem with the new technology," Gopalkrishna Gandhi said.
He also underscored the need for maintaining the premises of post offices.
The former Bengal governor paid tribute to postmen and women and said they play a vital role.
Later, he released a souvenir containing pictorial post cards depicting tourist places in Puducherry.
Chief Postmaster General-Tamil Nadu Postal circle M Sampath released a special cover depicting 'Mahatma, Mahakavi and Aurobindo', which was received by Gopalkrishna Gandhi.
A total of 200 frames with 30,000 stamps and 3,000 special covers have been displayed at the exhibition by around 80 philatelists, including 35 students.
