The Maharashtra government today handed over its 'Gaurav Puraskar' award to the family of Major Kaustubh Rane who was killed in Jammu and Kashmir in an anti-terrorist operation.
The award consists of a citation and cash. A cheque of Rs 6 lakh was today handed to Major Rane's wife by the district Sainik Welfare Officer at the family's residence in Mira Road area near here, an official release said.
The proposal for giving award to Major Rane came before the state government after he received a gallantry award on January 26 this year, but it was approved posthumously, the release said.
Major Rane and three soldiers were killed while foiling an infiltration bid in north Kashmir's Gurez sector on August 7.
