The Pakistan Peoples Party today invited the Muttahida Qaumi Movement to join the provincial government of Sindh after the latter had decided to sit in the opposition.
Senior PPP leader and former interior minister, Rehman Malik, led a high profile delegation to the MQM headquarters here to formally extend the invitation to join the government.
The MQM leaders informed Malik that the party's Central Coordination Committee will discuss the issue and make a decision according to the party workers' suggestions.
Speaking to the media during a joint press conference, Malik said that the MQM and PPP must join hands to improve the situation in Karachi and the rest of Sindh.
The invitation comes after the MQM observed two peaceful strikes in the city since the May 11 general elections to protest the kidnapping and killing of their workers and sympathisers in Pakistan's biggest city and financial hub.
Deputy convener MQM Coordination committee Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said he has informed the PPP leaders about MQM's concerns and would like to see them addressed by the Sindh government.
The MQM remained a coalition partner of the PPP in the centre and Sindh province in the last government.
In Sindh, the PPP bagged 62 of the 130 directly elected seats, while MQM won 37 seats in the general elections.
