History buffs may be in for a treat as public broadcaster Prasar Bharati is considering putting up famous speeches by Indian leaders, like Jawaharlal Nehru's iconic freedom at midnight speech, present in its archives, online so that people can access and hear them.
"We have a lot of digitised material on the speeches of our national leaders. These are not saleable commodities, you don't sell the family's heritage. We can put them up on the net so that anyone who wants to hear the freedom at midnight speech or others is in a position to download them," Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar said today.
He said the matter could be discussed in the Prasar Bharati board meeting tomorrow.
Sircar was speaking at an event organised by All India Radio (AIR) on the occasion of World Radio Day here.
He said in the radio sector, Short Wave was on the wane and there was a need to go towards Frequency Modulation (FM). He said Vividh Bharati services on FM should come up in a number of cities including the metros.
Sircar said Prasar Bharati was sitting on more than 40 huge plots of land which have been lying vacant for last 30 years.
He said he had asked the I&B ministry to take a holistic view on this issue and that Prasar Bharati could give these assets to a housing corporation like the HUDCO or NBCC and utilise these resources for its expansion without becoming a burden on the exchequer.
Sircar said Prasar Bharati was planning to increase the number of radio channels relayed on its DTH platform.
