Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur today responded to the allegations leveled on her by Punjab minister Bikramjit Simgh Majithia for not helping the Punjabis languishing in foreign countries during her tenure.
"Bikram Majithia should check his facts. 17 Indian youths were saved from the gallows as the government provided free legal expertise to all of them and even paid for their expenses to travel back home," Preneet, three times MP seeking re-election from her traditional Patiala seat, said.
"In my tenure as an MoS for External Affairs, 16,000 families from Punjab could benefit under the amnesty scheme in Italy and 40,000 total Indian families could avail this chance, as their 'paper work' was arranged on priority basis," she said.
For the abandoned women, a provision has been affected where an NRI spouse will have to remit 1500 to 3000 USD to her as support money, she said.
"I worked relentlessly on the Turban issue in Italy and France. This sensitive issue was readdressed after a pursuit and educating the Italian and French governments," she said.
She lamented that Majithia has forgotten that it was she who has facilitated the paper work for the family of Indians who have taken political asylum in Europe, Canada, Italy and US.
"I have a heart, a heart is not royal or common. It is this heart that worked for the facility to the poor NRI families to bring the bodies of Indian for last rites if they could not afford it," she said.
