The alumni of the Presidency University today condemned the vandalism at the premier institution last week and demanded that the West Bengal government immediately identify and punish those responsible.
"We demand of the state government that the attackers be immediately identified and punished, and adequate security be provided to prevent the recurrence of this shameful incident," a statement signed by 80 alumni said.
It also called on the university's Mentor Group and alumni of the institute publicly associated with the current state administration and the ruling party, to issue an unambiguous public condemnation of the incident lest their silence be construed as complicity and encourage further attacks on their alma mater.
The statement read "On 10th April, 2013, Presidency University, Kolkata was attacked multiple times by groups of armed hooligans from outside bearing banners of the students' wing of the ruling Trinomool Congress."
"These armed thugs broke into the university grounds, viciously assaulted students and teachers, and ransacked various parts of the university, including the historic Baker Laboratory. Media reports have identified well-known Trinamool activists from the area as being present during this unprovoked and unprecedented attack."
It also noted that according to the Vice-Chancellor, policemen on duty in the campus at the time remained mute spectators.
