The prime accused in the Kudlu bank heist near Kasargod district was arrested today at Karwar on the Karnataka-Goa border, police said.
Sherif was arrested early this morning from Karwar railway station with the help of RPF personnel, District Police Chief A Srinivas told reporters in Kasargod.
More than half of the 21 kg of robbed gold jewellery, which was buried under a coconut tree inside the compound of Sherif's residence, was also seized, he said.
A gang of five persons allegedly looted 21 kg of gold and Rs 12 lakh in cash after threatening the bank staff around 3.00 pm on September 7.
Police suspect involvement of more than ten persons behind the robbery, he said, adding, the role of others who helped the gang is also being investigated.
Sherif travelled from Mangaluru in Karnataka district to Mumbai two days back and was planning to flee to Nepal. But later he cancelled the programme.
Two other accused, Shabeer and Mahshooq had been arrested few days back, Srinivas said, adding police have intensified search for the others.
