A division bench comprising Chief Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice U B Saha passing the order yesterday, however, allowed private school teachers to offer tuition to students of other schools.
Disposing a suo-moto case, the bench held that schools should function for 240 days in an academic year.
The bench observed that if a system of private tuition by the government teachers is allowed to continue, there would be serious deterioration in maintaining the standard of education in the government schools.
Teachers should not engage themselves by way of self-employment or accepting part-time employment in private coaching. If they wish to impart tuition, it should be voluntary, it said.
