A proposal to sanction 54 new counselling centres in police station premises for women subjected to violence, is being considered by the Maharashtra government, Governor K Sankaranarayanan informed the state Legislature here today.
"Violence against women has once again come on centre stage due to the unfortunate incident in Delhi in December," the Governor said, while addressing a joint sitting of the Assembly and Council on day one of the budget session.
"My government has always been at the forefront to provide an atmosphere in the state, where women can move without fear. To guide and help women victims, 39 counselling centres were already working in the state.
"51 new counselling centres in the police station premises are sanctioned. Apart from that, proposal to give sanction to 54 new counselling centres is under process," he said.
With a view to provide common platform to women to address their problems, protect their rights, solve their grievances and provide necessary guidance through government system, the 'Mahila Lokshahi Din' is being implemented at division, district and taluka level in the state, he said.
Several measures have been also been initiated to take greater care of children.
A decision has been taken to certify orphans in child institutions and under 'Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil Swavlambi Punarvasan Yojana' to rehabilitate inmates of after care homes, he said.
To give exposure to hidden talent of orphan and destitute children in the government and non-government institutions and to develop a sense of brotherhood among them, a decision has been taken to organise 'Chacha Nehru Bal Melava' each year, he added.
