Curfew was today imposed for 48 hours at Kisanganj following widespread protests after a slaughtered animal was found near a place of worship.
"The district administration has clamped curfew for 48 hours as a precautionary step from 1 PM today," District Magistrate Animesh Kumar Parashar told PTI.
"The situation is under control at present. We will assess the situation and take further action," he said.
As soon as the information had spread about the slaughtered animal last night, people came out on the streets and staged protest by burning tyres, the police said.
Protesters today burnt tyres on the streets and forced shops and banks to down their shutters.
The Capital Express from Danapur to Kamakhya was delayed at Kisanganj railway station for over three hours due to the agitation, they said.
Superintendent of Police Deepak Barnwal said that additional police force has been deployed in the town to maintain normalcy.
The SP and other senior police officers were seen moving around the town.
Elderly people of all communities met the district magistrate and urged him to take steps to restore normalcy in the town.
Principal Secretary (Home) Amir Subhani said in Patna that the state government was keeping a watch on the situation.
The tension at Kisanganj comes close on the heels of an incident in Chapra yesterday when revellers carrying idols of Goddess Durga for immersion clashed with policemen here and torched six vehicles when they were prevented from playing loud music.
