A protest today saw demonstrators here slam the Union government for allegedly failing to take steps to secure the release of Indian Prisoners of War (PoWs) languishing in Pakistani jails.
The protesters raised slogans and burnt an effigy of the Congress-led UPA government as they demanded that appropriate steps be taken to ensure the release of Indian PoWs, who were held in jails of Pakistan the last four decades.
"The Central government is not serious about 1971-war prisoners who have been languishing in Pakistani jails for the last 43 years," one of the protesters alleged.
He added that neither was the government helping out the families of Indian PoWs who continue to "live in despair".
"Government should extend a helping hand to the families of the PoWs, so that they don't have to face any hardships, so that their children get educated... They deserve at least this much," he said.
The protest was staged by a local organisation -- Shiv Sena Hindustan -- and led by its state president, Pandit Rajesh Kesari.
