A protesting teacher attempted suicide by allegedly pouring petrol and setting himself on fire at Fauji chowk here today.
Samarjeet Singh, who was recruited under Education Guarantee Scheme (EGS) was protesting against the Punjab government for regularisation of jobs with other teachers.
He was admitted to civil hospital with 40 per cent burn injuries and later referred to Faridkot medical college for treatment, police said.
Senior Superintendent of Police Swapan Sharma visited hospital and enquired into the matter.
The protest had started from Goldiggi.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Himmat Singh Shergill termed the incident as unfortunate and said, "the youngsters have to burn themselves to make government listen to their genuine demands".
"We are aware of the pain that is being experienced by these agitating teachers, they have gained degrees to get jobs but anti-people policies of government are forcing them to take extreme steps.
I would request all the agitating brothers and sisters to wait till 2017," the AAP leader said.
"After formation of AAP government in Punjab, all the employees working on contract basis will be made regular", he said.
The teachers are protesting since last two months for regularisation of jobs at various places in the district.
