Punjab Assembly today paid rich tributes to former Lok Sabha speakers P A Sangma and Balram Jakhar who died recently, and those killed in the Pathankot terror attack.
The House was adjourned for the day after paying tributes to those who lost their lives in the period between the last sitting and the ongoing session.
The budget session of the Assembly began yesterday with Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki's address to the House.
Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal paid tributes to Sangma, Jakhar, former governors O P Malhotra and Lt Gen (Retd) J F R Jacob, former MP Tarlochan Singh, former MLAs Gurnam Singh and Manmohan Singh, former BSF DG Ashwini Kumar, Hero Motors Corporation chairman Brij Mohanlal Munjal among others.
The House also paid tributes to the personnel killed in Pathankot airbase terror strike and the 10 soldiers, including Hanumantha Thapa, who were killed by an avalanche in the Siachen Glacier on February 3.
A two-minute silence was also observed as a mark of respect to the departed souls.
Leader of Opposition Charanjit Singh Channi sought inclusion of names of farmers who had committed suicides due to heavy debt in the obituary references. "I have a list of around 13,000 farmers who committed suicide in the state. They should also be paid tributes," he said.
His demand was rejected by the Speaker.
