A quick legal redressal system and strengthening of the dispute settlement mechanism of mediation would help make Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Make in India' campaign a success, a senior Supreme Court judge said today.
"We have to make mediation a success. The reason is this. The Prime Minister says 'Make in India'. You want to make people come to India. For this, you must have a system of quick dispute redressal," he said.
"When foreigners will come to invest, there may be various disputes. They would look for quick redressal of disputes and mediation will settle disputes for such people," Justice J S Khehar, who inaugurated the Mediation Centre at Patiala House district courts premises here, said.
He also said that mediation was "the future for citizens of the country who need expeditious disposal of disputes."
Suggesting steps to make mediation a success, Justice Khehar said that paid mediation was required where lawyers would look at it as a career prospect.
"I strongly recommend paid mediation against free mediation...Let us make it a career prospect. Let there be people working for mediation all the time," he said.
Supreme Court's Justice A K Sikri said the mediation centre at Patiala House courts was a long pending demand of the lawyers' body and this mechanism has now become an "acceptable norm for resolving disputes.
