A protest by locals alleging police inaction in the probe into a triple murder case in the Raghuvir Nagar area turned violent, leading to injuries to eight policemen while two police vehicles were also damaged in the incident following which 26 persons have been arrested.
According to police, the clash last night took place hours after post-mortem was conducted on the three victims -- a 27-year-old woman and her two children -- who were found murdered at their residence in the west Delhi locality.
The clash occurred at around 10 P.M., by when scores of protesters had gathered in the area. The protesters blocked Najafgarh road, police said, adding that the protest suddenly turned violent and police teams in the area had to resort to mild force to bring the situation under control.
Police said the locals pelted stones at the police personnel, leaving eight of them injured while two police vans were also damaged.
The injured personnel were taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital and Guru Govind Singh hospital from where they were discharged later, said the official. A case was later registered of rioting and around 26 persons have been arrested in this connection, he added.
Meanwhile, police today put three neighbours of the victims, including their landlord, to intensive questioning which went on for hours. However, nobody has been arrested in connection with the murder of the woman and her two minor children.
"We are probing the case from all possible angles. Complaints about the deceased woman being teased by one of the suspects in the past have been taken into consideration. We have several leads and investigation is underway," said a senior official.
The 27-year-old woman, identified as Shabnam, and her two children -- Khushi (6) and Imran (8) -- were found murdered at their residence yesterday. While Shabnam was attacked with a sharp object, as suggested by a mark on her throat, the children were strangled to death, said a police official.
Three of Shabnam's other children -- two daughters aged 2 and 4, and a nine-month-old son -- were found sleeping peacefully in the same room. One of them later told police that about three persons had entered the apartment and had a scuffle with their mother.
Shabnam's husband, Zafar, was away in Jaipur when the incident took place.
Returning home at around 6.15 AM yesterday, he found the main door of the one-room apartment bolted from outside. Entering the apartment he found his wife and two of his children lying on the floor.
Police have not been able to trace the murder weapon yet.
