Congress vice-President Rahul Gandhi during his two-day visit to Punjab has set a "new benchmark for directly engaging with the people" to understand their concerns and grievances, the party's state chief Partap Singh Bajwa said today.
"Rahul Gandhi has set a new benchmark for directly engaging with the people. He came to Punjab by train and was in midst of the public, walked through the village bylanes to understand the hardships and devise solutions for the common man," Bajwa said in a statement here.
"The public is extremely disillusioned and disenchanted with the Akali Dal-BJP Government for their social, economic and political mismanagement and endemic corruption which is prevalent in the state. All these factors have cumulatively led to total anarchy in Punjab," he alleged.
The state Congress chief challenged both Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his son Sukhbir the Deputy CM, to go to Gurdwara in Bargari village (where the alleged sacrilege took place) to pay obeisance and partake 'langar' without their heavy security and "VVIP paraphernalia".
"I challenge Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal to leave the confines of their homes to interact with the people in the villages who have been agitating for more than a month," Bajwa said.
"Only then will they come to know the true measure of their so called popularity," he added.
Bajwa said his party demands judicial inquiry by a sitting Supreme Court judge into the "illegal police firing at Behbal Kalan village in Faridkot that led to the murder of two peaceful protesters".
"It is imperative to ascertain as to who ordered the police firing on the people protesting peacefully as it commonly known that such orders come from the highest echelons of the Government. The real perpetrators of this ghastly incident are being shielded by the state Government," he said.
"Rahul Gandhi has vowed to take this issue to its logical conclusion. Congress will soon lead a high level delegation to the President over the issue," Bajwa added.
