Gateman Bishwanath Debnath was forcibly taken away in a van yesterday, 20 kms from here.
Later, a ransom call was made from Debnath's mobile phone to Badarpur Railway Traffic Inspector Bikramjit Nath and Rs one crore demanded.
This is the second such incident. In 2011, another railway employee, driver Tarun Kumar Bhattacharjee, was abducted from Ramnathpur area of Hailakandi while on duty.
Police have started investigations into the incident but no one has been apprehended so far.
