Railways freight earnings up by over 10 per cent

Railways have earned Rs 76,501.01 crore from freight traffic during April 2013 to January 2014 as compared to Rs 69,313.47 crore during the corresponding period previous year, registering an increase of 10.37 per cent.
Railways carried 866.14 million tonnes (MT) of freight during April-January as compared to 827.82 MT carried during the corresponding period of previous year, registering an increase of 4.63 per cent.
In January 2014, railways earned Rs 8795.90 crore from freight, out of which Rs 3773.98 crore came from transportation of 46.55 MT of coal, followed by Rs 866.90 crore from 11.39 MT of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic users.
Railways earned Rs 865.78 crore from 10.65 MT of cement, Rs 779.39 cr from 5.03 MT of foodgrains, Rs 471.43 cr from 3.56 MT of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL), Rs 525.56 cr from 3.49 MT of Pig iron and finished steel from steel plants Rs 378.34 cr from 3.61 MT of fertilizers, Rs 144.02 cr from 1.38 MT of raw material for steel plants except iron ore, Rs 380.57 cr from 3.91 MT by container service and Rs 609.93 cr from 6.83 MT of other goods.
