Rain water harvesting systems at 1,885 rail premises

More than 1,800 rain water harvesting systems have been installed at various rail premises for recharging groundwater, Lok Sabha was told today.
Besides 37 water recycling plants have been set up in different locations and works have been sanctioned for setting up of such plants at 37 more places costing about Rs 48 crore.
Presently, 1,885 rain water harvesting systems have been installed at different locations including railway stations in various zones, Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain said in a written reply.
For efficient use of water, Railway is setting up recycling plants at such locations where water is scarce and provision of the same is economically justified. The recycled water is mainly used for maintenance of wagons/coaches and cleaning of stations.

The work of installation of rain water harvesting system is a part of maintenance and construction activities of railway buildings. As such, no separate fund is sanctioned for it, he said.
