Rains claim five lives in UP, rivers in spate

Moderate to heavy showers lashed various parts of Uttar Pradesh today, leading to death of five persons in rain-related incidents and taking the total number of deaths in the state this monsoon to 196.
While three people died after struck by lightning in Fatehpur district, two died in house collapse in Amethi.
According to the relief commissioner office, as many as 196 persons have lost their lives in various rain-related incidents in the state this monsoon.
Meanwhile according to a Central Water Commission report, major rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, Sharda and Ghaghra continued to flow above the danger mark at various places.
Water level of Ganga is rising between Kannauj to Ballia, where it is flowing above the danger level.
Yamuna has crossed the danger mark at Prayag Ghat (Mathura), Auraiya, Kalpi, Hamirpur and Chilla Ghat (Banda), while Betwa has crossed the red mark at Sahijana in Hamirpur.
Sharda at Palia Kalan and Ghaghra at Elgin Bridge and Turtipar are flowing above the danger level.
Ram Ganga at Moradabad and Dabri (Shahjahapur) and Rapti at Shrawasti, Balrampur, Bansi and Gorakhpur are flowing close to the red mark, they said.
The MeT office said Basti and Regoli received the maximum 7 cm of rainfall, followed by Phoolpur, Churk and Robertsganj 6 cm each, Akbarpur 5 and Ballia and Amethi 3 cm.
According to MeT forecast, rain and thundershowers may occur at many place sover the state in the next 24 hours.
