Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vandana Rathore, however, suspended the sentence for one month on an application moved by them for suspension of the sentence to file an appeal.

"We were protesting to secure justice for a rape victim in 1997, which took place in JC Bose hostel of Rajasthan University. The act was extempore and merely to secure ends of justice but with no criminal intent. We will file an appeal against the order," Beniwal said.

Sharma was a former president of Rajasthan University Student Union.

Beniwal, who was elected MLA on BJP ticket, was recently expelled from the party.
