Ranjith, who will also write the movie, tweeted "Kabali... magizhchi," indicating the official title.
It will be produced by Kalaipuli S Dhanu. Bollywood actress Radhika Apte is expected to star opposite Rajinikanth, while actor Prakash Raj is likely to play an important role.
Social media is abuzz that the 64-year-old superstar would play the role of a don as the name "Kabali" in Tamil film history is traditionally associated with dons.
Several dons and their associates in Tamil movies were named Kabali in the past. Kabali is the popular short name of Kabalishwara in Tamil Nadu, the presiding deity of the ancient temple in Mylapore of Lord Shiva here.
Rajinikanth's previous movie "Lingaa", released in 2014, bombed at the box-office and the actor faced some issues with a section of distributors, who wanted him to refund them.
