A large group centre of the CRPF for 5,000 of its personnel and their families will soon come up at Uttar Pradesh's Chandauli, the home district of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
Officials said the Home Ministry has recently cleared the proposal of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to change the location of the proposed group centre from Taralu in Karnataka to Chandauli under the Varanasi division.
The centre will be spread in a 150-200 acre area and the country's largest paramilitary force has been asked by the ministry to "urgently" begin the process of acquiring land for raising the establishment in coordination with the Uttar Pradesh government.
"The group centre is expected to be built and operationalised by the next one to two years. It will also have the range headquarter of the force and facility to house about 4,000-5,000 personnel and their families," a senior official said.
The Union home minister was born on July 10, 1951 in a farmer's family in the Babhora village under Chakia tehsil of Varanasi district, now under the Chandauli district.
A group centre of the CRPF has four-five battalions under its jurisdiction and one battalion has about 1,000 personnel.
The CRPF has few other group centres in Uttar Pradesh including in Amethi, the parliamentary constituency of Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi.
The about 3-lakh personnel strong CRPF is tasked as the lead security force to conduct operations in Naxal violence hit states and for combating militants and insurgents in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast.
