Brother of Ranbir Singh, for whose fake encounter 17 Uttarakhand police personnel were sentenced to life by a Delhi court, has claimed that few unknown persons had threathened him and his father to not pursue the case, police said today.
Ranbir's father Ravinder Pal and brother Sandeep today approached police and lodged a written complaint at Sahibabad police station.
"I received a threat for my father Ravinder Pal on June 29 at around 11.25 AM when I was at my ice-cream shop situated in Lajpat Nagar area of Ghaziabad.
"A car with four persons in it halted near my shop. Three persons got off it, came to me and told to make my father understand that he has grown very old and at this stage, he should not fight legal case," Sandeep told PTI.
Sandeep said, "we are aware that the 17 cops, who were awarded life term for Ranbir's fake encouter are moving High Court. That is why this threat was made."
Ravinder Pal had been representing his son's case in the court.
"We have received a complaint about the threat. Ravinder Pal's house and his family members have been put under round the-clock security cover. A PCR van has also been stationed outside their house," Hardayal Yadav, station officer of Sahibabad police station, said.
A Delhi court had on June 10 awarded life imprisonment to 17 Uttarakhand police personnel who were convicted for gunning down 22-year-old MBA graduate Ranbir in a fake encounter in a jungle near Dehradun in 2009.
Special CBI Judge J P S Malik had handed down the jail term to the 17 cops after holding them guilty on June 6 of involvement in the conspiracy to kidnap and kill Ghaziabad resident Ranbir, who went to Dehradun to take up a job on July 3, 2009.
