Concerned over large number of ad hoc teachers in leading educational institutions including Delhi University, the HRD ministry has decided to push for a major recruitment drive for permanent faculty.
"In Delhi University we have decided that all this adhocism has to end. There have to be permanent posts, for which the ad-hoc teachers can also apply," HRD minister Prakash Javadekar said.
He also made it clear that institutions should not have a huge proportion of ad-hoc teachers.
"This ad-hocism is acceptable for say 5 percent of the faculty but not for 50 per cent," Javadekar told PTI.
He said the HRD ministry provides funds for faculty and this money should be utilised and hoped that in two years time permanent teaching posts in most of the major institutions would be filled.
It is learnt that there are over 900 vacant teaching posts in Delhi University alone. Ad hoc teachers, many of whom have been working for years, have been protesting against keeping these positions vacant.
Speaking about the issue of vacancies, he said that the process to fill up vacancies in Kendriya Vidyalayas is also on.
