Relief from floods in MP, Assam; 10 deaths in Maha, Rajasthan

At least 10 people were killed in rain-related incidents in Maharashtra and Rajasthan even as there was some let up in the flood situation in Madhya Pradesh and Assam with no casualty reported from the two states since yesterday.
Several parts of the country received monsoon rains with heavy rainfall in the national capital, some places in Rajasthan and in eastern Uttar Pradesh, but precipitation eluded Bihar, Punjab and Haryana, where sultry weather caused discomfort to people.
In Maharasthra, eight persons have died in rain-related incidents in the past 36 hours.
Gaganbawda taluka received highest rainfall in Kolhapur district in last 24 hours ending at 8 AM today.
The heavy spell caused a substantial rise in the water level of Panchganga river near Kolhapur city which is now flowing near the danger mark, following which a disaster management team has been put on alert.
An IMD official said heavy rains coupled with thundershowers are likely in the Konkan region, north and south central Maharashtra.
He said following heavy rains in the catchment area of Godavari in Nashik, the authorities there and in Ahmednagar districts have put the villages along the embankment of the river on high alert.
Incessant rains also disrupted rail traffic between Surat (in Gujarat) and Nandurbar as the earth work underneath the tracks was washed away forcing railways to divert traffic.
Meanwhile, in Madhya Pradesh, where rain-related incidents claimed 22 lives till yesterday, there was as no fresh casualty reported in the last 24 hours.
"Monsoon is going to weaken over the state in next two to three days," India Meteorological Department Bhopal Centre's Director, Anupam Kashyapi, told PTI.
Officials said some flooding has been reported from Sehore district but the situation was under control.
In Rajasthan, two people were washed away in flood waters in two separate incidents, as rains continued to lash several parts of the state with heavy precipitation in Ajmer, Bharatpur and Udaipur divisions.
Dungla in Chittorgarh recorded maximum of 11 cm rains while Danpur in Banswara registered 9 cm rains till the morning since yesterday.
A 35-year-old man was swept away in the flood waters of Ghadawali river under NH 27 bridge yesterday in Baran district. In another incident, a 40-year-old government school teacher was swept away in the flood waters yesterday while he was crossing culvert of river in Samraniya village.
