Director Subhash Ghai, whose two '80s hits 'Ram Lakhan' and 'Hero' are set to get their remakes, says while redoing a film one should make sure that it will be relevant with time.
'Ram Lakhan' will be remade by Karan Johar and Ghai while superstar Salman Khan is remaking 'Hero' with two fresh faces Suraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty.
"What happens generally is when a filmmaker do a remake, sometimes they are not able to justify it. Remakes should be significant with time and if the essence of them are not lost then they are always appreciated by the audience," Ghai told PTI in an interview.
The 69-year-old director said films are not about entertainment only.
"Films are not only for entertainment. It plays an important role in bringing out several social issues. Films should be made to depict the culture and tradition of our country," he said.
The leading actors, who will step into the shoes of Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor, in Ghai and Johar's collaboration 'Ram Lakhan' are yet to be finalised.
"Karan Johar along with Rohit Shetty will be associated with me for the remake of 'Ram Lakhan'. We are yet to decide the final starcast," he said.
Ghai was the chief guest at the ongoing Delhi International Film Festival and was honoured with the prestigious lifetime achievement award for his contribution to Bollywood over three decades.
He feels film festivals are quite important and it should be taken seriously.
"Films that gets screened at these festivals are very different from the commercial movies. People should attend these screenings as it always touches upon many important and different aspects. They may be long and boring but it serves its purpose," he added.
