The woman, a resident of R K Puram in her defence, denied her complicity in the case and also said she had not got recovered the clothes. She also said that her son has already been acquitted by the Juvenile Justice Board. The court, however, said "acquittal of the juvenile in the case has nothing to do with the present trial of his mother under section 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the IPC, it being a separate offence in itself". The court took a lenient view towards the woman in sentencing on the ground that she was 50-year-old and her husband was suffering from cancer. The court also said every citizen is expected to help the authorities in delivering justice and not to cause hindrances. "The offence of murder as well as rape and sodomy had been committed. The convict (Sunita) had caused disappearance of the evidence of such an offence. Every citizen is expected to aid the authorities in administration of justice and one is not expected to cause hindrances in this direction," it said.
