The EC said it considered this matter and gave "ex-post facto approval to these transfers in view of the fact that these transfers were carried out due to the urgency of the serious law and order incident". Purakayastha had replaced then police chief Ranjit Kumar Pachnanda for his alleged failure to apprehend criminals who shot dead a police constable in broad daylight during a clash between students belonging to ruling Trinamool Congress and Congress in Garden Reach area of Kolkata on February 12.
