A rogue wild boar that had killed a man and left seven others injured, was hacked to death allegedly by villagers of Chakroda in Kendrapara district today, a forest official said.
The carcass of the male boar was spotted at a cluster of bushes near the local gram panchayat office where prohibitory order under section 144 CrPC had been imposed earlier.
The carcass bore multiple injury marks, the official said, adding that in all probability, the wild boar was killed by local people.
The animal had strayed into the locality from forest areas close to Lalitgiri Buddhist monastery, forest range officer of Cuttack Territorial Forest Division Ashok Jena said.
The body is being sent for post-mortem.
Local forest officials had made an official request to the higher-ups to proclaim the boar as a rogue animal so that it could be shot dead for the safety of the local people, the official said.
The rogue animal had killed a man and had injured at least seven persons in Hatabanpur, Chakroda and adjoining villages since February 13.
Four forest personnel were assaulted yesterday by a mob at Chakroda village to protest against boar menace.
Police registered cases against nearly 30 local people for assaulting the forest officials. However, no arrest has been made in this connection.
