Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah cancelled his programme to unveil the statue of Mahatma Gandhi here due to "protocol violations" in invitation card, which displayed his large picture above the mugshots of the Father of the Nation and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Rosaiah, who is the only political appointee from UPA rule to remain on Governor's post after the BJP came to power at the Centre, said despite his "advise" and objections about the manner in which the invitation card was made, the organisers did not listen to him and altered the card after which he cancelled the programme, which was slated to be held at Chilakaluripet on Friday.
When contacted, the Governor told PTI that he initially agreed to participate in the programme, but cancelled when he was informed about the invitation card which carried the picture of Mahatma Gandhi at the bottom.
"Initially he (the organisers) brought an invitation of six pages with pictures of national leaders on it which I curtly refused to entertain as it looks derogatory.
"When they came to me, I said I will come. Later, they brought a draft invitation with six pages. Immediately I told him on his face that this cannot be accepted. I told him that he cannot place the picture of Mahatma Gandhi below.
"Before I planned to come here, a friend who is a lecturer in Chilakaluripet, informed me about the invitation card. He also sent me the card. Without thinking further, I cancelled the programme," Rosaiah, who is former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, said.
A Guntur district official said some leaders of a political party had raised objections on the manner in which the invite was printed.
The organisers published invitations which displayed Governor's large size photo above the mugshot of Mahatma Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and some other BJP national leaders which were placed at the bottom of the card.
