Centre has sanctioned around Rs 92 crore for a solid waste management project in Srinagar city to make the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir a model city.
"The Union Urban Development Ministry has sanctioned a project of Rs 91.97 crore for solid waste management in Srinagar city with an endeavour to make it a model city," Jammu and Kashmir's Minister for Urban Development and Urban Local Bodies, Nawang Rigzin Jora told reporters here.
The Minister said the project, which is under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), has two main components of collection and transportation of solid waste in the city and processing and disposal of the waste at Achan - the lone dumping site in the outskirts of the city here.
"An amount of Rs 50.42 crore will be spent on treatment and processing of the waste at Achan, while Rs 40 crore will be utilised on door to door collection of garbage from the city," Jora said.
Jora flagged off a fleet of garbage collection vehicles of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) which comprised of 20 hopper vehicles and four garbage compactors procured at a cost of Rs 1.81 crore to streamline the collection and disposal of the solid waste.
He said the city generates around 600 MT of solid waste every day and sought the cooperation of the citizens in ensuring better service to make the city clean and protect the environment.
