The general meeting of SDMC was adjourned today amid a walkout by Congress councillors in protest against a resolution of the BJP-ruled municipal corporation to pay homage to VHP leader Ashok Singhal.
The general meeting of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) began with the Leader of House Ashish Sood proposing for paying condolences to late Singhal and the victims of the Paris terror attacks.
As soon this was proposed, Congress councillors opposed it and started raising slogans against BJP.
Congress councillor and Leader of Opposition Farhad Suri registered his objection that the resolution for condolence to Singhal was taken without prior consultation with opposition councillors.
He also said that it was not possible for Congress councillors to pay homage to Singhal. "We can not pay homage to a person who is a symbol of dividing the society and who damaged secular fabric of the nation," Suri said.
While the BJP members and office-bearers of the House continued with reading the condolences to Singhal and Paris victims, opposition councillors walked out of the meeting.
Suri said "although we walked out we separately observed a silence of two minutes paying homage to victims of the Paris terror attack".
However, the resolutions paying homage to late Singhal and Paris victims were passed and the House was adjourned, said Radhe Shyam Sharma, Chairman of Standing Committee.
The House also passed a censure motion condemning protest by Congress councillors.
Veteran Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Singhal died at a hospital in Gurgaon on Tuesday following a brief illness.
