The seizure was made when police, acting on a tip-off, checked the baggage of the 38-year-old man who boarded a private bus bound for Chennai.

The consignment was meant to be smuggled from Chennai to Hong Kong where seahorses are used in medicinal purposes, they said.

Seahorses, named for their equine appearance, range in sizes from 0.6 to 14 inches. Although they are bony fish, they do not have scales but rather thin skin stretched over a series of bony plates. They are mainly found in shallow tropical and temperate waters throughout the world.
