Buoyed by their five successive wins, Salgaocar FC are now looking to close the gap at the top when they take on United Sports Club in the 21st round I-League match at Tilak Stadium here tomorrow.
Salgaocar FC, who are second with 33 points from 19 games after beating Dempo in their last match, are now four points behind leaders Bengaluru FC and a win tomorrow will see them close the gap to one point.
United Sports Club's poor form continued as they have collected just five points from their last nine outings and have 20 points from 19 matches. They are in danger of falling into relegation zone.
As the race for the title hots up, Salgaocar are better placed to challenge Bengaluru as they have four matches at home out of remaining five, while Bengaluru FC have to play four away matches, and against tough opponents.
Salgaocar coach Derick Pereira stressed that no team can be taken for granted.
"We have one away match with Pune FC. Now we are playing with just two days break against United Sports Club tomorrow. We need to recover from injuries as Rahul Kumar is not fully fit from the hamstring injury which he suffered in the last match. The boys are playing well and hope they continue their form and keep on winning in the remaining matches if we are to win the title," stated Pereira.
"Our opponents are having a poor run but they are an unpredictable side. You never know when they will strike form as they have few good players who can turn the match on a given day. They have a new coach and we do not know his pattern of playing. So we have to be on guard and give our best and keep on winning," he added.
