Right from doubling the four entry gates, to increase the capacity of the bucket seats and give an international touch to the facilities, the state government has promised full support to the Kolkata franchise which has made the VYBK, also known as the Saltlake Stadium, its home venue.
It was decided after team co-owners Sourav Ganguly and Utsav Parekh met Sports Minister Madan Mitra at the stadium to chalk out the renovation plans. Though the stadium has capacity of 1,20,000 spectators, the number of seats are limited to five-seven thousand while the remaining parts of the gallery are made of concrete slabs.
"At present we've four entry gates to enter the stadium and we suggested if it could be doubled. Even the seats are limited to about five to seven thousand only. It also needs to be increased," he said.
Among other things, the VIP enclosure, dressing rooms, toilet facilities will be renovated while there are plans to bring in corporate boxes keeping in mind with the international standard of the league.
There's also a plan to change the artificial turf and bring back the natural turf which would, however, take place early next year ahead of the U-17 World Cup in 2017, he said.
