Supreme Court today dismissed a plea for setting up of a special investigating team (SIT) to probe whether the government has made any serious effort to bring to justice fugitive Dawood Ibrahim, in the wake of reports that the underworld don was willing to return.
"We cannot look into this issue. It is not for the judiciary," a bench comprising Chief Justice H L Dattu and Justices Arun Mishra and Amitava Roy said.
The bench dismissed the PIL filed by Madhya Pradesh resident Kishore Samrite who through his lawyer submitted that an inquiry was needed in view of reports appearing that Dawood, wanted in 1993 Mumbai blasts, was willing to come back.
The lawyer claimed that thereports have suggested that a senior CBI officer, now retired, was on record that the fugitive was willing to surrender.
"We only want to know whether the state was interested in bringing back Dawood Ibrahim," the lawyer submitted, before the PIL was dismissed.
